Star Cares Fund
Back to Main
STAR 94.5 developed the STAR Cares Fund Initiative as a way to give back to our community. Every day we share news and community information with our audience, but we wanted to really show our concern. Often, we hear of families or non-profit organizations that are in need. STAR 94.5 wants to do as much as we can to make our community thrive. So when you hear us say "STAR cares about our community," we want you to know we really mean it!

STARCares Recipients 2006

Lana Turner (mother of 7, evicted)

  • Her mother sent a letter explaining that she was about to be evicted from her apartment. She was in need of a job and housing large enough to contain her family. We put her in touch with the Orlando Urban League for employment and housing opportunities. Lana did get a job and when housing became available, STAR 94.5 paid her 1st month's rent and utilities.

    Birth Place (A.A. Birthing Center)

  • She is originally from London and is a licensed mid-wife. Part of a dying breed in the U.S., Jenny Joseph came to Florida and opened the Birth Place more than 10 years ago. She has delivered hundreds of babies and provided pre-natal care to scores of indigent women in the Central Florida area. Ms. Joseph is a sought after speaker for women's health issues affecting minority women and low birth weight babies....

    Margie Chapman (concerned citizen)

  • Ms. Chapman and her family live in Lake Mann apartments on Ivey Lane where drugs and violence are the norm. Ms. Chapman took a stand against the ills affecting her family and neighborhood and contacted police with information on the activities occurring in her neighborhood. She walked in to her apartment after that, and found it vandalized and the walls were graffiti covered. STARCares brought out their afternoon jock, Eric Davis and presented a check for $1,000.00 to the family....

Earlene Thorne (son died in crash)

  • Ms. Thorne was brought to our attention by a concerned listener and friend. Her son had been killed ˝ mile from the radio station in a "freak" car accident. The family had very little insurance and we wanted to assist with their funeral costs....

    Sabrina Gwynn (cancer patient)

  • Ms. Gwynn is suffering from a rare form of leukemia that affects her bone marrow. She has had cancer since she was 8 years old (she is 28 now). In need of a bone marrow transplant, STAR 94.5 wanted to help with medication or other costs. There is also a fund developed in her name at Center State Bank Mid Florida 1051 E. State Road 50, Clermont, FL 34711 352/242-1815. STAR 94.5 is in the process of trying to find other ways (through bone marrow drives, etc.) to further assist Ms. Gwynn.

    YMCA Black Achievers

  • This program has been a staple in the community for many years. It provides minority students with an opportunity to be exposed to behavior, testing procedures, speakers and anything else that encourages them to go to college. We found out that inner city kids can go on college tours with this organization for as little as $30.00. Inner city kids meet weekly to interact at the Y and other areas around the city. STARCares donated $500.00 to their Saturday sessions towards lunch for the students. ....

    Harbor House

  • Founded in 1977 as the Orange County Center for Domestic Violence that provides temporary safe shelter, counseling and supportive direction for individuals who are experiencing abuse in their intimate relationships. Harbor House has designed a variety of community based programs which provide information and support and serve as the springboard for life changing steps for victims and their children.....In 2004, 10 people died from domestic violence. Orange County ranks 4th highest in the state for domestic violence offenses and 10th highest for domestic violence murders.

    Family of Busha Ann Gray

  • STARCares for another family stricken by violence in our community. We donated $1,000.00 to the family of Busha Ann Gray, the young mother who was gunned down in a hail of bullets in front of her children. Accepting the check on behalf of the Gray family is Undersheriff Malone Stewart and Victims Advocate Laurie McKenna.
