James Johnson awoke to the sound of "popping, and realized that his home was on fire." He ran to wake up his grandchildren and other family members and was able to get everyone out safely. He did not pay the insurance for December in hopes of having a little more money to spend for Christmas...and now his family is homeless and has lost all of their possessions. On Monday February 5th, Monica and program director Kevin Gardner paid a visit to the Johnson family and donated $1,000 from their STAR Cares fund. They are our January recipients.

Our February STAR Cares recipient is CJ Bellamy. This 17-year old Edgewater High School student was shot on Dec. 27, 2006 at the Mobil station on Colonial and John Young Parkway. It's another story of the violent crime in our city, since CJ didn't know his attacker - he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. CJ played basketball for his high school and was a former Junior Magic player. On Sunday February 4th, Monica and Nick Anderson - community relations and former Orlando Magic player surprised CJ and his family with $1,000 from STAR 94.5, $500 from the Orlando Magic along with team jersey's, sneakers, and a signed basketball.
