Happy Monday to You! Hope you're enjoying a nice long weekend in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King...Hope you'll make it a day on and just a day off!

Thank you to the hundreds of families that enjoyed the King parade downtown and the Gospel Showcase at Lake Eola. On behalf of STAR 94.5, I would like to thank the gospel choirs that raised the spirit, the Just Playin' Performance Troupe for their stirring renditions of the Civil Rights March, the Kings and our local heroes, our sister Myra J from the Tom Joyner Morning Show as well as Rev. Chambers for closing out the show and sending us on our way singing and praising. Thank you Lord for holding back the rain too!

Today, besides the Pappy Kennedy Breakfast, Ocoee will honor the king with a parade that starts at 10:00 a.m., Deltona's having a community fair at Manny Rodriguez Park, at Hannibal Square in Winter Park, it's the 6th Annual Unity Heritage Festival and then at noon- Chief Valdez Demings of the Orlando Police Department will speak at a lunch and learn at the Wells Built Museum on how women have benefitted from the dream...Happy King Holiday!

Today's special topic was the current recession and what we can do to stay afloat during this time. Many of the listeners agreed that we are in a recession and some even believed that we are nearing a depression. Much of the advice offered to stay afloat during this recession stayed along the lines of establishing some savings. Listeners were also advised to check their credit report. Listeners were urged to visit www.annualcreditreport.com to obtain free copies of their credit report and to also visit www.myfico.com to get their credit score. After reviewing their credit report and scores, listeners were told to follow up with any disputes and/ or correction that need to be made.

You all have been pretty vocal about these debates lately, don't be sidetracked like they are...you know the devil works in many ways...use your vote wisely. Remember we may not have delegates, but we still need to hit the polls January 29th to vote for other municipalities – like Orlando Mayor, a couple of the commissioners are seeking re-election and of course there's the big tax referendum...Keep in mind that Sunday will be the last day for early election...so make your vote count...

Speaking of tax questions you may be having - Commissioner Tiffany Moore is having another property tax reform workshop at Sadler Elementary on West Oakridge... At 6:30 this Thursday. She's invited Property Appraiser Bill Donegan will be present to answer your questions on the upcoming referendum on the January 29th ballot... Ladies this is a moment for you. January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, it's appropriate for it to be in the first month of the year, because if we start the new year off taking care of ourselves, perhaps we'll get in to the habit all year long. Statistics from 2 years ago show that while cervical cancer amongst us as a nation may be lower, there were 833 cases of newly diagnosed cases here in Florida - close to 3 hundred women died as a result of it. Why? Because they never got a pap smear - the test that a Gynecologist performs in his office that can detect the cells. Sisters we can do better, brothers you'll have to help us, remind your lady annually, that she needs to have a pap test done. If the results show abnormal cells it doesn't always mean the worst, but you must follow up.
