COMMUNITY MINUTE 01/6/08 - 01/13/08

Mon. 01/07/08
Welcome back from the weekend. Hope you had a good one. As we enter this new year, please remember that January is National Mentoring Month. STAR 94.5 is partnering with the Orange County Public School system to encourage the community to take time out of their schedule and share your self with a student. You'd be surprised a the difference you'll make.

A great education system builds stronger communities, provides better future employees and attracts new businesses to the area. Mentoring is all about sharing with youth people sharing your life experiences, knowledge and wisdom. Overall – let's say we hold one another accountable for getting ourselves and a colleague to give one hour even, a month for the rest of the school year to a child in our community...our students are our future...STAR Cares about our Community.

Faith is taking a step, even when you don't see the whole staircase. The time is fastly approaching that we honor the man who spoke these words. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15th and we will celebrate his legacy as a nation on January 21st.

Dr. King was a Baptist minister, Nobel Laureate, and Civil rights leader who was effective in changing the way people think. Take a moment to consider your life without the leadership of Dr. King. Don't forget to join STAR 94.5 at Lake Eola as we celebrate the life of Dr. King through the parade and gospelfest...STAR Cares about out Community. Thurs. 01/10/08
Along with National Mentoring Awareness, January is also National Birth Defects Prevention Month. For more information, visit the web site of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network. About 120,000 babies (1 in 33) in the United States are born each year with birth defects. A birth defect is an abnormality of structure, function or metabolism present at birth that results in physical or mental disabilities or death. Several thousand different birth defects have been identified. Birth defects are the leading cause of death in the first year of life. There are a number of steps a woman can take to reduce her risk of having a baby with a birth defect. One important step is a preconception visit with her health care provider. During this visit, the provider can identify, and often treat, health conditions that can pose a risk in pregnancy, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. The provider can provide advice on lifestyle factors, such as quitting smoking and avoiding alcohol, and occupational exposures that can pose pregnancy risks. The provider also can make sure that any medications a woman takes are safe during pregnancy. All of these steps help prevent birth defects ...STAR Cares about our Community.
