COMMUNITY MINUTE 04/13/08-04/20/08

Mon. 04/14/08
Hope you had a great weekend, if you heard Community Connection yesterday morning with my guest Sonya Rivera from Victim Service Center, she'll be one of our facilitators tomorrow night at Jones High School, along with Harbor House for domestic violence, the Orange County Health Department and Orlando Police. This is Sexual Assault awareness month – did you know that every 2 minutes someone is assaulted in the United States – and that college women are 4 times more likely to be victims.

STAR 94.5 wants to help keep our students in high school and our young college students safe, so please join us for a community meeting on Teen Dating Violence – the focus will be on sexual, physical and emotional assault. This is the time to come out and be informed....For more details, go to our website star94fm.com

Tues. 04/15/08
In yesterday's local section of the Orlando Sentinel there was a photo of a teen mom and her young baby. The 18 year old goes around to various schools to tell her story of motherhood and how it's changed her life. In fact the young mom who admittedly dropped out of school and used drugs prior to having her baby, calls her infant a lifesaver of sorts for her.

At what point did the young mom start using drugs and why? There are so many young girls who get caught in this cycle...many are emotionally strapped by low self esteem, their expectations for life sometimes don't exceed their environment or on the other hand –girls like my grandma use to say "just got caught." STAR 94.5 wants to talk with all of the girls and boys tonite, 6pm at Jones High School... Come out and hear the facts about HIV, teen pregnancy, teen dating violence, sexual assaut and more...Go to our website star94fm.com

Thank you all for commenting live or via email on what you think should be STAR 94.5's next topic for a JENA meeting. One thing Dr. Williams asked is that the speakers come back during the day when her students can really be present.

Today I'm visiting Gateway on Silver Star and our next stop as Principal for the Day is Evans and we're excited about both. There's so much that our kids gain when you take the time to visit and take a moment to share yourself, so family the first thing I suggest is enroll with Orange, Seminole, Oseola or whatever county you chose and become an additions member or volunteer.

On another note, if you plan to attend the African American Chambers – Doing Business with, series next week on Tuesay – today is your last day to RSVP –- This workshop is with Lynx – learn more about procurement opportunities and more. Our kids need the scholarship support....
